About enterprise

Post Office Farm Nursery, Company

Post Office Farm Nursery is located in the Macedon Ranges north west of Melbourne. We specialise in the genus Helleborus having collected and grown them in gradually increasing numbers over the past 17 years. The nursery was established at the beginning of 2002 and plant sales began that same year. In recent years there has been a surge of interest in Hellebores. For the keen gardener there is much to admire about them. They flower in winter when colour is most valuable, boast a wonderful variety of flower colours and forms and are not difficult to grow. The foliage of many Hellebores can provide a valuable structural element in the winter garden. The 2011 Post Office Farm Nursery Open Days are now on! Until the end of September we will be open every Sunday. Come and see a large range of the finest quality Hellebores in full flower. See the ‘Events & Fairs’ page for all the details. Post Office Farm Nursery also sells Hellebores by Mail Order within Australia from April to October or until sold out. We also attend several plant fairs and exhibitions throughout the year.

Double Bicolour Helleborus
In stock
Possibly our most stunning double flowered form, we owe these to the breeding work of Ernie and Marietta O'Byrne in Oregon, USA. The back of the petals are a glossy dark pink to burgundy colour while the insides are a paler pink tinged white. The overall effect is quite special we think.

Dark Pink Helleborus
In stock
These have been separated out from the pale pinks to offer as a distinct strain. They have mid to dark pink flowers, often with attractive darker coloured foliage, making for quite distinctive plants.

Black Helleborus
In stock
These are selected from crosses between our very darkest forms. Very dark purple to almost 'black', a mysterious colour found in few other garden plants. Many also have attractive dark coloured young foliage. These can become addictive.
Group: Decorative plants
Double Primrose Yellow Helleborus
In stock
One of the latest Hellebore colours to 'go double', these are hand pollinated seedlings from a handful of double primrose yellows we have collected from imported seed. We expect a significant improvement in the quality of these from 2011as our new breeding stock comes into play. Still very rare and...

Double Dark Bicolour Helleborus
In stock
A new offering for 2011. These are similar to the double bicolours but with a darker purple back to the flower, the overall effect is more gothic. They have pale insides to the flowers which create quite a distinctive look.
Group: Ornamental plants for landscaping
Double Pale Pink Helleborus
In stock
Hand pollinated seedlings from selected double forms. This year we have selected from our best pale shell pinks for this strain. Most of these are derived from the iconic Australian double 'Mrs Betty Ranicar'. These are good vigorous plants.

Double Pink With White Back Helleborus
In stock
First time we have offered these and quite stunning they are. A very unique double flowering form which has a mid pink inside colour (some solid, some spotted) to each petal while the backs are white. Unusual as most 'bicoloured' hellebore flowers are dark on the backs and paler inside.
Group: Decorative foliage plants
Double Pink Gunther Jurgl Strain Helleborus
In stock
These are all crosses from a wonderful batch of double flowered plants I obtained from Basil Smith in the UK. They are derived from the German bred double 'Gunther Jurgl'. As plants, they are more compact in habit than the typical Australian bred doubles but with well shaped often more outward...

Double Picotee Helleborus
In stock
These were the surprise result from crossing some of the different anemone centred forms. White to pale pink background colour with very distinctive reddish veining along the fully double petals. We flowered the second generation crosses from these last year and they have proven quite a stable...

Apricot Peach Helleborus
In stock
This strain has proven to be a bit of a challenge. Still on 'probation' due to some inconsistency but holding its place in the list on account of its potential. At its best, a beautiful colour form, in shades ranging from pale apricot to orangey peach.
